Reducing waste helps keep costs down and protects our environment
We send thousands of tonnes of waste to landfill each year, and more than half of it could be reused or recycled. A key challenge for the future plan is identifying the most practical and affordable ways to recover more recyclable materials.
National policy changes are increasing the cost of sending waste to landfill, while also encouraging greater recycling and recovery. The WMMP will help us plan for these changes and make sure services remain effective and affordable.
The district's three refuse transfer stations (RTS) at Matamata, Morrinsville and Waihou are between 25 and 30 years old. The waste assessment found they are no longer well equipped to support modern resource recovery and will need significant investment over time.
This plan sets the direction for waste in our district over the next six years.
